Construction of energy-generating sound barrier starts in October
With the final approval of the City Council for the higher costs and the signing of the construction contract, construction will start in October. It is expected that the Energieleverend Geluidsscherm along the Schagerweg, Huiswaarderweg and Nollenweg will be completed before the summer of 2023. It is a great success for the residents of the De Horn Zuid and Huiswaard-2 districts.
In addition to reducing noise levels, the Energieleverend Geluidsscherm is a good example of a project in which the municipality of Alkmaar is contributing to reducing CO2 emissions. If other municipalities and organisations imitate the Energieleverend Geluidsscherm, this will generate even more sustainable energy nationwide. This is in line with the government's demand for rapid and extensive generation of sustainable energy.

Planning
In September/October the ground will be prepared for construction. The entrepreneurs K_Dekker, Sunprojects, Krinkels BV and Sunconnect will start the construction of the northern screen on the Schagerweg/Huiswaarderweg in October. The construction of the southern screens at the Huiswaarderweg and Nollenweg will follow soon. The final steps are the installation of the solar panels and the connection to the grid.
To reduce noise, a screen of 2.5 kilometers long and 5 meters high will be installed. Part of the screen along Huiswaarderweg and Nollenweg will be fitted with a green screen with solar panels on top. The approximately 4,300 solar panels can provide green power to approximately 400 households.
Costs, funding and grants
Because of the price increase of raw materials and transport, the Energieleverend Geluidsscherm ultimately costs more. The screen is financed with funding from the municipality of Alkmaar and the province of Noord-Holland, various subsidies including the ERDF subsidy and income from the sale of the generated electricity. The Alkmaar Energieleverend Geluidsscherm is more economical than other noise barriers.
Participation
From the first moment, the Animo foundation and the residents of the neighborhoods De Horn Zuid and Huiswaard-2 were involved in the process step by step. The residents' group 'Interested Parties' and the Animo Foundation helped with the design of the screen. The residents information evenings were also well attended.
