Solar Park Valgenweg opened
Valgenweg solar park in the Netherlands ceremonially opened
On 19 October 2023, the newly constructed Valgenweg solar park in Delfzijl in the Netherlands was officially opened. It is a successful joint project of company WIRCON GmbH, Sunprojects which built the park, and the land owner Groningen Seaports. Other shareholders in the solar park are the local energy cooperative "Bronnen van ons" with its shareholders Eemsdelta Energiek and Windvogel, which opens up the possibility for households in the province of Groningen to benefit from the renewable energy generated locally.
The Valgenweg solar park is located in Delfzijl in the north-east of the Netherlands. The construction of the solar park took five months. 31,176 solar modules with an output of 17.5 MWp were installed, which supply around 17 GWh of electricity annually. More than 8,750 tonnes of CO2 are saved annually.
Axpo and Nobian, a leading manufacturer of industrial chemicals, have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) in the Netherlands, the companies have previously announced. Under the 15-year contract, Axpo Group will purchase 17 GWh of green electricity per year generated by the Valgenweg solar park and supply it to Nobian's production facilities in Delfzijl.
The construction of an earth wall in the north of the solar park will serve as a visual barrier for the residents. After completion of the construction work, flower strips for insects will be created within the solar park. These can become important food sources for wild bees and other insects. The construction of the solar park has already taken into account that it can be grazed by sheep. This requires special bite protection devices so that the animals do not injure themselves and electrical cables cannot be damaged.
