Solar Noise Screen starts on 11th of March
On March 11, 2023, the first piles of the Solar Noise Screen will go into the ground. Preparatory work along the Huiswaarderweg (N245), Schagerweg (N245) and Nollenweg (N508) will have been completed by then. Meanwhile, the old noise barrier has already been removed, the trees have been felled and the ground has been prepared for construction. The sound barrier is expected to be completed in October.
Work will start Friday, March 10, at 8 p.m. and be completed Monday, March 13, by 6 a.m. at the latest. Stadswerk072 is working 24 hours a day that weekend. Residents should expect noise nuisance. The piles will be vibrated into the ground. This causes less noise than driving the piles into the ground.
Example project
“The Solar Noise Barrier is an exemplary project with which the municipality of Alkmaar is contributing in a unique way to reducing CO2 emissions. In addition to reducing noise pollution for residents, the renewable energy generated by the screen can also be used to power 400 households. If other municipalities and organizations soon start making the screen as well, this will generate even more renewable energy nationwide. That fits with the demand of the government," said Alderman for Sustainability Nicole Mulder.
The ambition from the collaboration partners such as Inholland and energy company Lokaal Groen is to eventually produce more screens. For the construction of this innovative structure, the municipality of Alkmaar will receive a subsidy from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and co-financing from the province of North Holland.
Extra soil research
To gain additional assurance about the construction, additional soil testing took place in January. Following those results, the construction for the foundation will be adjusted. By taking careful measures now, the municipality is ensuring that the Energy Rendering Noise Barrier can also withstand extreme weather conditions. According to the adjusted planning the sound barrier will now be ready in October.
